The day begins with a meeting in a beautiful location
Mākslas Pietura organizes painting plenairs across Latvia—in manors, parks, by lakes, and other scenic locations where nature becomes the main source of inspiration. Check out our upcoming Events
Participants gather at the pre-arranged location, get to know each other, and leisurely take in the surroundings. Within the very first minutes, the daily rush fades away, and you get the feeling that this day is going to be different.
If you don't yet know what a plenair actually is and how it differs from regular painting classes, read our article: Plenair - painting in nature for beginners and professional artist. Why should you try it at least once in your life?
Everyone chooses their own landscape
After a short introduction, we find the perfect spot to paint together. One might choose to paint a lake, another an old oak tree, a manor house, or a blooming meadow. Each plenair participant works on a motif that inspires them, and at their own pace.
It doesn’t matter if you are holding a paintbrush for the very first time or have been painting for years. Everyone receives individual help and guidance.
Step by step, a painting comes to life
During the plenair, professional artist Ilvija Žeigure helps you master the basics of landscape painting and shares her more than 25 years of experience.
You will learn:
- how to choose a successful composition;
- how to see and capture light and shadows;
- how to mix colors and find nature's true tones;
- how to depict depth and perspective in a landscape;
- how to capture the mood of a specific place in your painting.
The instructor demonstrates examples from her own work, offers individual advice, and helps everyone discover their own unique painting style.
What should you bring to the plenair?
One of the most frequently asked questions is - do I need to bring my own materials?
No. Everything is taken care of during our organized painting plenairs. You only need to bring:
- comfortable clothing;
- a hat for sunny weather;
- water;
- the desire to be in nature and enjoy the creative process.
All painting materials - easels, canvases, acrylic or oil paints, brushes, palettes, and aprons - are fully provided.
Four hours that fly by
A plenair usually lasts about four hours.
During this time, participants work leisurely on their chosen landscape. Unlike working in a studio, the main goal of a plenair isn't to meticulously paint every tiny detail. It is much more important to capture the light, the mood, and the feeling of that exact moment.
That is precisely how paintings with a unique character are born—each one different and completely one-of-a-kind.
Why paint in nature?
Painting outdoors offers an experience that simply cannot be replicated by working from a photograph or inside a studio.
During a plenair, you will develop the ability to:
- notice the interplay of light and shadow;
- see the fine nuances of nature's colors;
- create a balanced composition;
- train your observation skills;
- paint more freely, boldly, and confidently.
That is exactly why plenairs are highly valuable for both beginners and professional artists alike.
More than just a painting
At the end of the day, you will head home with much more than just a piece of art you created yourself.
You will also take with you new knowledge, inspiration, a sense of peace, and beautiful memories. Many participants share that a plenair feels like a mini-vacation—a chance to unplug from the daily routine, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse themselves in the creative process without any rush.
Perhaps that is precisely why so many return to our plenairs time and time again. Not just for the paintings, but for the feeling.
How to prepare for your first plenair?
If this is going to be your very first outdoor painting workshop, remember—no prior experience is necessary.
There is no need to worry about the final result or whether you will know how to paint "correctly." The most important thing is your desire to try something new, to be in nature, and to enjoy the process.
The instructor will help you learn everything else, step by step.
